I wonder if you were to spray brick walls how would you level the surface to prepare it for cement rendering. If render sticks to it at all ? I would love to spray my walls with closed foam but I wonder how would I facade it afterwards ?

I am in the middle of a gut-reno of an old balloon framed block house zone 4A. We framed new exterior walls 5" off the block (required by engineer for structural reasons), and the current plan is to spray 2 inches of ccSF continuously along the masonry walls, then add mineral wool batts to each stud bay. My question is, mineral wool is 3.5". Should it be pressed against the foam, leaving a 3" gap between it and the drywall? Or is it better to leave a gap between the foam and mineral wool? Why mineral wool and not more closed cell? Sound attenuation. Urban location. Thanks for any help!

Gutted my 100 yr old small house and had 3 inches sprayed on the dimensional 2x4 walls. R30 bats in the ceiling. It sits on a hill 8 miles inland from Lake Michigan, 50 miles south of Mackinaw. Not a mild situation. It's ridiculous how easy it is to heat this place, and the extra structural strength makes it hard to notice a strong wind. Pricey, but wow.

I'm wondering if there could be a condensation issue in colder climates, if any research has been done how this practice holds up to the test of time? A life long carpenter and builder I think having air flow between sheathing and insulation will alleviate the chances of condensation condensation.

did 4" of closed cell and that stuff is so strong that i feel like the house almost doesnt need sheathing.

Would this work with the diy CLOSED CELL 2 part isocyanate kits? My 2 course brick house circa 1908 started life as a bank. I sprayed closed cell foam for a number of years back in the day for a local guy and im 99% sure the kits would work provided its closed cell. Im on a shoe string budget and i know others are also. Yes calling a professional is ideal but not always practical. Thank you for your vids!

Does this hold true for metals roofs as well? I have an 8/12 pitch on a new build and have ice and water the entire roof prior to metal going on. No strapping between roof deck and metal. thanks. In Quebec (cottage).

What about a retrofit. 8/12 pitch. Remove the fiberglass blown in and shoot down 7” of open cell. Would the cost saving of foam outpaced solar if someone wanted to invest in cost savings

We start breaking ground in September to build our barndo on a slab foundation in KY. We are using zip osb on roof and siding. I was doing some research on what type of spray foam to use against osb, we have decided to use open cell spray foam on roof deck and walls because it will be going directly on osb. Still deciding if we need to use foam board insulation under slab though. Your thoughts on this.

Always wondered what foam was this color? We use Gaco, don't usually go with off brand foams

Thats a great method. Havent had any pop yet off substrate but thats a great method to help keep the foam from stressing. Thanks for sharing 👌

Hello Mr Jones: I have a couple of questions.. I'm having a new all metal building put up.. The beams, girts and trusses are galvanized, do l need to prime them with something prior to spry foam? #2 How thick should the foam be on the under side on the roof? Non vented roof.. Thank you.

Fantastic video. I own a custom home billing company down in Texas and we use foam encapsulation. Just started a UA-cam channel and the one video I posted about foam had several of these kind of comments about all the “issues” with foam. Pretty harsh on the "new guy". EVERYONE was the new guy at some point! The new guy isn't "always dangerous" The new guy with good equipment, knowledge, and the willingness to get the job done to a high standard is ok. Yeah, it's going to take a little longer, but the standard is there. I agree with you that it's more risky, but not "always dangerous" I'm thankful someone took a chance on me

How long does the concrete need to cure prior to spraying foam?

I would like to ask a question, central Texas, slab on grade, post frame construction with wall and roof sheathing, I want to spray foam this home / shop. What is recommended open or closed and thickness walls and roof. I would greatly appreciate your input.

Love you videos, just finished the spray foam in my new build in Arkansas. Nobody wanted to spray the roof deck but your videos convinced me it was the right choice, so I did it. i was able to keep 4000sq ft at 75 degrees with a 8000 watt portable Air conditioner while it was over 90 outside. Can't wait to get it finished. Great information, and would love to see you move to the US.

would u put a shipping container on blocks and spray under it then sit it down ?

After calling multiple companies in my area, getting an absolutely crazy quote for my small attic from one, and never getting a call back from the others… I’m not sure what to do now. I’ve been doing a lot of research (on this channel especially) and for my attic DIY seems to be on the very edge of feasible

What makes spray foam pull down OSB, making the appearance of a wavy roof? Both houses were new construction.

Very cool. That makes all kinds of sense. The load transfer from the concrete to the structural fill would be way better. What's the compressive strength of this stuff? They build entire overpasses on top of structural foam.

It gets ridiculously cold here in the Dakotas. So winter time is for snowboarding. By January 1 it’s usually pretty crappy and I’m mostly shut down for the next few months. I’ll do the occasional job here and there where it’s like a basement on a home that’s already been heated for months or years at that point, but everything else is waiting for better weather.

So you have an indirect fire heater, but you don’t have the exhaust plumbed outside in this video. So all the combustion moisture and fumes are pumped into the structure. Is that how you normally use that heater or what’s up here?

Everything stinks and off gasses. The carpet stinks for a month. The drywall mud smells to high heaven. The paint. I even bought a purple mattress and had to leave it uncovered with the fan running for over a week before I could sleep in the same room, because it gave me such a headache.

Main reason to use foam and batt is for sound isolation.

Let me be clear: YOU ARE CORRECT. What is amazing is that here in florida they STILL buy into the myth. At least the folks I have had over to my home for spray foam quotes.

I do not know how I missed this video. Bottom line, when the desire to have an extremely insulated residence, you are living in a bubble. The real pros and cons are two factors. The first factor is the amount of money you want to spend on your new build or renovation between to the two categories of insulation and HVAC. With the second factor being how fast is the return investment and long term savings achieved from the first factor? As we learned over the last year, the published R-value of closed cell spray does not do it justice. The effective performance of CC foam has been tested with results of anywhere with a range from 2x to 3x higher. The BTU retention of the interior condition air whether it is heat or cooling will hold its value for a much greater period. Interesting to note, SIP & Nail Base manufactures are now putting that information as well in their technical bulletins with 2x the performance of published R-value. Whereas other forms of insulation would require vast amounts of insulation and a greater overall wall thickness. That also means installing your windows and doors in a proper position to avoid the interior condensation build up. At that point you are now in the high-end passive house category. With coverage from the basement to the roof. Now, you are slowly seeing increase R-values for the basement, or a 1st floor that comes close to the roof requirement. Hence, the bubble effect. As Mike clearly stated now and, in the past, when you make a house extremely tight, you must have the right balance with your HVAC equipment regardless of the type of insulation and thickness of. A house does not breath, rather the need to dry out from moisture. Organic specimen such as us humans, floral, and our beloved pets need to breath. Therefore, the balance in the HVAC equipment must be correctly specified for moisture removal and air quality to keep the interior correctly conditioned in the bubble.

What's a general rule of thumb to set all of my heaters at? I usually set everything at 53 C. But it just seems a little "runny" to me. Especially doing an overhead, I get a lot of drips.
